USA Special Event Description:
Downtown Holiday Spectacular!
The San Jose Holiday Parade has been recognized for more than 20 years as a downtown holiday spectacular. The international award-winning San Jose Holiday Parade tradition began in 1981 when Santa Claus rode in a horse-drawn carriage to the park for the opening of the Christmas in the Park display at Plaza de Cesar Chavez in Downtown San José and it has become a very important part of the community and businesses. The parade has helped people rediscover the Downtowns museums, restaurants, shops, and activities.
Named one of the Top 25 Parades in America, 100,000 spectators view specialty units, marching bands, guest celebrities, giant helium balloons, and exciting floats. Each year, numerous floats compete for prestigious awards and top middle school and high school marching bands compete for honors in the Battle of the Bands competition. A sneak preview of the holiday festivities can be seen at the Annual Inflation Celebration held the night before the parade. The festivities include the inflation of giant helium balloons, a preview of parade floats, and performances by specially selected parade units.
After the parade, spectators can enjoy ParadeFest @ Christmas in the Park. ParadeFest includes community entertainment, wellness and community information, the presentation of the Battle of the Bands awards and a holiday concert by the U.S. Marine Corps Band.
